The Foiling SuMoth Challenge

Force 7 Sailing will be competing in the International Foiling SuMoth Challenge - a student design competition to promote sustainable practices by challenging university students to design, build, and race a sustainably built boat. The competition aims to establish a community framework for aspiring professionals, providing them with the opportunity to innovate new concepts before entering the industry.

The competition, sponsored by 11th Hour Racing, occurs throughout Foiling Week - the pinnacle foiling event that sees over 1,000 sailors compete in various foiling boats and attracts +100,000 views each year. The SuMoth challenge stands by Foiling Week’s five pillars - Inclusion, Accessibility, Education, Sustainability, and Safety.

Our team members have unique industry experiences from the cooperative education programs at Memorial University of Newfoundland and Dalhousie University. This will enable us to create an innovative design that will be sustainable and efficient. This project will also provide a unique opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge and develop valuable hands-on experience.

Our Approach

  • The team will research materials and previous designs and gather as many resources as possible to ensure we remain up-to-date on the most utilized techniques. Research will continue into each phase of the project.

  • The team will work together to design and analyze all elements of the foiling moth, such as the hull, foils, rigging, sails. The design and materials team will work together to implement sustainable methods to our concepts.

  • The team will build prototypes to test our designs before finalizing the design and building our moth. Utilizing manufacturing skills and methods that remain within the sustainability budget for this project, we will bring our design to life.

  • Our team of sailors will practice using our moth before the competition. The sailing team will ensure they are competition-ready!

  • Our team will be competing in the Foiling SuMoth Challenge in Italy. As a rookie team, we want to represent our universities and team well and remain competitive against the other, more senior teams. Our team's goal is to arrive at the competition with a sustainably innovative and competitive boat.

  • The overall goal is to learn as much as possible through this project. Each member of the team is looking to enhance their academic experience and apply the knowledge they learn through their degrees.

The Global Goals:

As the Foiling SuMoth challenge prioritizes sustainable boat design and community collaboration, it aligns perfectly with our team’s commitment to delivering hands-on education, fostering an inclusive team dynamic, and implementing sustainable practices, all in line with the United Nations Global Goals for Quality Education, Gender Equality, and Climate Action. This alignment enables us to develop an innovative design that achieves sustainability and efficiency goals.
