Monthly Recap: May

Team Update.

May was a great month for Force 7 Sailing. Despite many of our team members being engaged in work terms or summer courses, we have continued to make significant progress on our project.

The hull of our boat is currently under construction in Halifax rather than St. Johns. The team has almost completed the construction of the female mold, having attached the station braces. We encountered a minor setback with a broken vacuum pump, but it has been resolved, and the team is eager to continue the build.

Three of our team members from Memorial University had the incredible opportunity to present at the Mari-Tech 2024 Conference and Exhibition in St. John’s. At this event they were interviewed for a feature on the Gale Force Wins Podcast. This exposure was a fantastic chance for our team to network, build connections, and gain insights from industry leaders.

Our logistics team is actively working towards acquiring a used Moth to train our athletes over the summer. Our goal is to have sailors ready for the Foiling SuMoth Competition next year. We also plan to repurpose the mast and sail from this Moth for our own boat. We will use an older model, and pre-owned moth to promote sustainability. This is more sustainable, as it recycles a previously used boat into a new project without wasting any new materials.

The highlight of this month was the preparation of the upcoming SailGP event in Halifax. Several of our team members participated in various capacities—working for SailGP, racing Waszps in the Inspire Racing program, or volunteering. This preparation included putting together the F50s, running Tech Tours, and testing new technology such as the new “T foils” which Sail GP is beginning to trial.

Stay tuned for some exciting content from the SailGP event!
